Old Goat!

No information available due to an avalanche in the area.

So we headed out this morning in hopes of hiking Old Goat Glacier! Its right next to the 3 Sisters Dam with the man made lakes there. The road to drive in was blocked with a gate so we parked right there and started walking in. We didn't really know where we were going to so we walked about 2 km(there was 100m sign markers) and we could not find the trail. There is a hydro line service road that was really over grown so we stayed on that as much as possible. We then ran into a massive pile of rocks that was spilled all over the road. We looked up and there must have been a massive avalanche there because it came up from far up the mountain and almost into the lake there. We decided that if we couldn't find the path we would walk up the avalanche and see where it took us.

It is a lot harder than it looks to hike up a bunch a medium sized rocks loosely sitting on one another with random trees everywhere. We did pretty good though considering we didn't get injured or anything. We came right up to the base of the mountain and there was a little stream of water coming from it, and we wanted to take the ridge around to it and go up the crack in the mountain. Just as we started heading over there the path narrowed and we were about 100 meters from the little trickle of a waterfall. To our left it was straight down into the little valley, and just then the rocks underneath Robert started to fall. Robert tried to catch himself but the rocks kept on falling fast underneath him. I yelled at him to come back towards me and he stuck his walking pole in and came back. That was a bit to close for comfort so we decided to stop where we were and chill for a bit looking at a beautiful view of the lake.

On the way down it was a bit harder to walk over the rocks but we got out just fine. In all it was around a 4km hike up. When we came out of the trees and back on to the gravel path we saw lots of people! There were people with their dogs exploring, people fishing, and people chilling out on the lake in a rubber raft. We just got in our vehicle and came back to Calgary to eat some Five Guys! Yummy!
The Lake at 9:30am

Its locked! Time to walk. Old Goat is the mountain in the background.

This woodpecker was making a lot of noise to help scare off the bears.

Our view where we stopped.

We are the BEST!
